This is structure and craft work involving the general maintenance and repair of machinery, equipment, mechanical systems, and buildings at a county correctional facility along with general knowledge of electrical work, plumbing, and sewage systems. Work includes monitoring inmate behavior for security purposes and instructing and overseeing the activities of an inmate crew engaged in maintenance and repair tasks. Work is performed under the supervision of the Jail Administrator, Assistant Jail Administration and Maintenance Chief.

13. Maintain confidence and protect Somerset County by keeping information concerning inmates, clients and operations confidential.
14. Take direction in a professional manner from the Correctional Supervisors and Administrative Staff.
JOB DUTIES (INCLUDE BUT NOT LIMITED TO):
Monitors and controls inmate behavior in order to maintain institutional security.
Inspects incoming vehicles and institutional shops and cells for contraband and unauthorized materials in order to maintain institutional security.
Oversees and instructs inmates working on maintenance projects in order to ensure work is accomplished correctly and safely.
Installs, repairs, and services cell and security door locking devices and constructs security doors and cells in order to ensure prescribed security levels and measures are maintained.
Performs general replacement, upkeep, and repair of heating, plumbing, and electrical fixtures or equipment such as clearing clogged drains, replacing external fixtures and performing similar tasks in order to maintain systems.
Repairs electrical wiring, fixtures, motors, and communication systems in order to maintain a safe and functional electrical system.
Installs and repairs steam, water, and sewage lines in order to maintain functional plumbing and heating systems.
Operates and services sewage treatment system in order to ensure efficient treatment plant operations.
Maintains, operates, and repairs heating and ventilating systems in order to ensure a comfortable and safe environment.
Cleans and maintains boilers and oversees the activities of inmates engaged in cleaning and maintaining boilers.
Repairs, maintains, and alters masonry, walls, and woodwork in buildings in order to ensure structural stability and meet code and occupancy requirements.
Repairs and services laundry, kitchen, and woodshop equipment in order to ensure safe and efficient operation and maximize equipment availability.
Cleans, maintains, and services hand tools, machines, equipment, and work area daily in order to comply with safety standards, prolong equipment life, and maintain equipment availability.
Operates snow removal equipment in order to clear walks, driveways, and roads.
Repairs and maintains hydraulic and mechanical systems in order to ensure safe and efficient operation.
Assist the Maintenance Chief with other duties as assigned.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk and talk and hear. The employee is regularly required to sit, stand, bend, lift, climb, use hands to use manual and power tools, finger a standard computer keyboard, use a computer, touch screen, printer, copier and other specialty equipment as required.
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job require close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Employee is required to operate a motor vehicle or other vehicle or equipment. Employee will regularly come in contact with inmates and must possess sufficient physical dexterity to employ necessary and lawful non-deadly physical force to address inmate resistance.

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet. Sometimes it may be loud due to various equipment requirements.
REQUIREMENTS AND SKILLS NEEDED FOR THE POSITION:
High School diploma or equivalent.
Knowledge of the tools, equipment, materials, methods, and practices used in plumbing, welding, electrical, and general maintenance and repair work.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions needed to perform mechanical repair work.
Ability to read, understand, and follow manufacturer’s specifications and instructions for using, cleaning, and repairing machinery and equipment.
Ability to use standard power and hand tools.
Ability to operate acetylene and arc welding equipment.
Ability to clean, lubricate and adjust small engines, electrical motors, pumps, and other machinery and equipment.
Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
Ability to apply general carpentry and masonry skills.
Ability to perform general mechanical repair work, electrical repair and plumbing repair.
Knowledge of applicable building and safety codes.
Knowledge of institutional security policies and procedures.
Ability to read, understand and follow blueprints.
Ability to pursue and/or maintain a boiler operator’s license.
Ability to provide instruction and oversee the work of assigned inmates.
Ability to use electrical test equipment such as ohm and voltage meters.
Ability to work with supervisory and other staff in a collaborative and effective manner.
Commitment to running a safe and secure jail.
Ability to remain composed in emergency situations.
Certified in CPR or able to obtain certification.
Capable of physically controlling violent, unruly members of the inmate population using methods established pursuant to policies, procedures, and training.
As a Public Safety/Essential Services position, must be able to work extended and additional hours as needed.
Two (2) years experience in the general maintenance and repair of machinery, equipment, mechanical systems, and buildings.
High pressure boiler operator’s license highly desirable.
